Ashen is taking place in an open world, non-linear game with RPG action. The title was prepared by independent New Zealand Aurora44 studio, founded by experienced artists in the film industry. Members of the studies met while working on such titles as The Hobbit, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Prometheus and The Planet of the Apes.
The game is set in a gloomy, sunless universe where the only source of light are active volcanoes, constantly raining down successive layers of ash. Ashen tells the story of a lonely wanderer, traversing the gray world in search of a place that he could call home. Since all items sooner or later are destroyed as a result of another volcanic eruption, the main focus in the game was placed on interpersonal relations and relations with other survivors, represented by the other players.
